Winegrower. Artist. Wife. Mother.
Karin was born in Björsatar,, Sweden - a small farming village two hours south of Stockholm. She immigrated to the United States in 1974.
Her father, Nils- Olov, (an explorer and of rich Viking blood himself) had the opportunity to visit the United States in 1958 as an exchange student and knew one day he would bring his family back to the this great country and land of opportunity. Monica (mom) and Olle purchased their first 20-acres north of Geyserville, near Asti, with a field of Italian varietal winegrapes in the north end of Alexander Valley in 1978. Eventually the entire ranch consisted of a 200-acres only 10 miles away from Garden Creek Ranch & Vineyards.
"As a young girl, I loved living on a ranch and knew nothing else. I remember learning to drive the tractor and ripping open fields at the age of 11. Working each and every summer in the vineyards - only many years later realizing the enormity of what we had learned. My family always worked together – it was the old European way and perhaps being poor farmers trying to succeed you needed to work as a family unit. In 1982, my family produced our first wine – a Petite Sirah sold for $24 a case, that’s $2 a bottle! Warnelius Vineyards was born. We eventually built up to 2,000 cases per year. My passion for the artistic expression of the land - the soil, vineyards and wine – has always been a part of me. I absolutely love it."
My university studies lead me to San Francisco with a degree in International Business – Marketing and a second degree in Art + Graphic Design.
With experience in her family winery both in Alexander Valley and in Västerås, Sweden as well as a 4-year stint at Boisset Wines and a year at Kendall-Jackson - her knowledge of wine marketing and sales extend from the negociant to the corporate wine business. It's the hand-on family approach that makes sense. Working towards my family future and producing wine from our family ranch is extremely rewarding and inherently natural. We keep it small and simple for a reason. Karin had her own graphic design company with an emphasis on food + wine packaging and logo design for over ten years and continues to take on a project or two a year.
Karin and Justin are married with 2 children, a girl and boy - Elsa and Leif. They feel very lucky to have found each other living in an amazing environment while being able to create beautiful things together including their children and their wines.
